STUDENT MEETS WITH CONGRESSMAN COSTELLO IN WASHINGTON, D.C. Washington - Derrick C. Cooper, Jr. met with U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) in his Washington, D.C. office today. Derrick, a graduate of Belleville West High School, was in our nation’s capital to participate in the U.S. Presidential Scholars 2007 National Recognition Week activities. Derrick was selected as a 2007 U.S. Presidential Scholar for the Arts. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by executive order of President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded in 1979 to recognize students who display outstanding artistic talent. “I congratulate Derrick on being selected as a 2007 U.S. Presidential Scholar for the Arts and wish him the best of luck in the future,” said Costello.
